The NHL and the NHL Players' Association is expected to open negotiations on a new collective agreement later this week, according to the SportsBusiness Daily.

NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr said Monday, after the first of three days of meetings by the players' union that he expected talks to begin "very quickly" after the meetings finish on Wednesday. Several dates were set for talks over the rest of the month and into July, according to the SportsBusiness Daily, with the location alternating between New York, headquarters of the NHL, and Toronto, where the union's head office is located.

The NHLPA is expected to name its 30-member bargaining committee by Wednesday. However, Fehr said he wants as many players as possible to attend the bargaining sessions and he will not issue any gag orders to the players concerning the talks.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, on the other hand, is maintaining his policy of not allowing the league's owners or general managers to talk publicly about the issues.
