Phoenix Coyotes forward Brett MacLean's condition is improving after suffering what the NHL team called a "cardiac emergency" while playing hockey Monday night in Owen Sound, Ont.

"He's conscious and he's speaking," MacLean's agent, Anton Thun, said Wednesday. "They anticipate taking him out of intensive care [Wednesday night] and running tests to determine why he collapsed."

MacLean, 23, was administered CPR after he collapsed during a pickup game. He was taken to hospital in Owen Sound, Ont., and then transferred by air ambulance to a hospital in his hometown of London, Ont., and placed under intensive care in the cardiac unit.

MacLean split last season between the Coyotes, the Winnipeg Jets (who claimed him on waivers and then saw him go back to the Coyotes three weeks later on waivers) and the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League. He scored two goals in 13 games with the Coyotes and appeared in five games for the Jets without scoring. He had 25 goals in 63 games for the Pirates after being assigned to the AHL by the Coyotes.
