Leafs cut 23 players Add to ...

The Toronto Maple Leafs made their first training camp cuts on Wednesday afternoon, dropping their 70 player roster down to 47 with two weeks remaining until the season starts.

Sent to the Marlies were Josh Engel, Will Acton, Brayden Irwin, Dave Cowan, Kyle Neuber, Denny Urban, Kelsey Wilson, Matt Caruana, Tyler Brenner and Jamie Devane.

Sent to junior were David Broll, Andrew Crescenzi, Sam Carrick, Josh Leivo, Josh Nicholls, Sondre Olden, Stuart Percy, Brad Ross and Garret Sparks.

And released from amateur tryouts were Garrett Clarke, Mitch Heard, Mike Schwindt and Matt Stanisz.

"They're told the things they need to work on, why they're not here and how close or how far they are away," Leafs coach Ron Wilson said of his message to the cut players. "It's easy with the junior kids.

"There'll be some guys who played for the Marlies last year who didn't really get a sniff, but we only have so many guys [who can stay]. We've got to get down. We're two weeks from the start of the season. That's just the way it is."

Wilson said he hopes to get closer to 25 or 26 players by the end of this weekend.

"I'm still trying to evaluate players more than anything," Wilson added. "Some lines and some people have grasped some of the concepts that are a little bit different than last year. Other guys, it's going to be a little bit longer to understand why we're changing some things."

As for Wednesday's preseason game, Erie Otters captain Greg McKegg draws into the lineup in the rematch with the Philadelphia Flyers.

"He's got some high-end skill and it's a good opportunity for him to gain some more experience before he goes back to junior," Wilson said.

Jonas Gustavsson and Ben Scrivens will split duties in goal.

Here's a full list of who is left in training camp, by position:
