Messier names Canadian roster for Deutschland Cup Add to ...

Mark Messier set a couple of Canadian team rosters Wednesday as he prepares to make his coaching debut.

Former NHL goaltenders Jean-Sebastien Aubin and Fred Brathwaite headline the team Messier will coach at the Nov. 12-14 Deutschland Cup in Munich.

Messier, who will coach Canada at the Spengler Cup in December, also set a roster for Tuesday's one-game Swiss Challenge against Switzerland. Former NHLers Mark Bell and Brendan Bell were among the players named to that squad.

The rosters for both the Deutschland Cup and Swiss Challenge comprise Canadians playing in Europe.

The events will be Messier's first coaching assignments. The former NHL star was Canada's general manager at the IIHF World Hockey Championship in May when the national team finished seventh.

Canada opens the Deutschland Cup against Germany on Nov. 12 before taking on Switzerland and Slovakia.

Canada last participated in the four-team Deutschland Cup in 2008, winning gold.
