Rangers’ John Tortorella blasts NHL officials for penalty shot call

Outspoken New York Rangers coach John Tortorella has blasted on-ice officials at the Winter Classic for a late penalty shot call against his team.

"They called a penalty shot which I still don't understand," Tortorella said. "I'm not sure if NBC got together with the refs to turn this into an overtime game. I thought the game was reffed horrible.

"I just thought tonight, in that third period, it was disgusting."

Rangers goaltender thwarted Philadelphia centre Danny Briere's penalty shot sending New York to a 3-2 victory in Monday's outdoor game at Citizens Bank Park.

NBC televised the game and HBO had 12 camera crews filming the on-ice and behind-the-scenes action for its 24/7 series.
