Robin Buck didn't take the checkered flag, but after a penalty to Andrew Ranger he came out the winner at a NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race Sunday.
Ranger, a two-time series champion from Roxton Pond, Que., started from the back of the field but crossed the finish-line first after getting the better of a duel with teammate Alex Tagliani.
But series officials assessed Ranger a pass-through penalty for aggressive driving, which he ignored. The penalty pushed him back to 21st overall and give the race to Campbellville, Ont., native Buck.
Tagliani started in the pole position and led for 24 of the first 27 laps, but on Lap 28 Ranger made contact with Tagliani while battling for the lead sending the driver from Lachenaie, Que., into the guard rail and to the back of the pack.
It was Tagliani's first race since last weekend's Indianapolis 500, the crown jewel of the IndyCar circuit.
Tagliani had the pole in Indianapolis - the first Canadian to ever do so - but crashed and finished 28th in the 33-car field.
Scott Steckly of Milverton, Ont., finished second.
