A superb performance from Magali Harvey led Canada to a 31-7 rout of Spain on Friday at the 2014 Women's Rugby World Cup.

Harvey led Canada's offence with 26 points on three tries, four conversions and a penalty.

Mandy Marchak had the other try for Canada.

Canada dominated the game and came close to a shutout before Spain scored a try with a few minutes left on the clock.

Canada next plays Samoa on Tuesday.

The Canadians (1-0) are trying to improve on their best World Cup result of fourth, achieved in 1998, 2002 and 2006. The team was a disappointing sixth in 2010.

Canada led 24-0 at the break thanks largely to Harvey, who had all of Canada's first-half points.

Harvey opened the scoring in the 18th minute when she collected Andrea Burk's chip and dove into the corner of the Spanish goal area. She converted her try to put Canada up 7-0.

Harvey stole the ball moments later and ran it back 60 metres for her second try in five minutes.

After kicking a penalty, Harvey converted her third try of the game at the 36 minute mark to give Canada a sizable first-half lead.

Canada continued to dictate play early in the second half, with a successful penalty and Marchak's try increasing the lead to 31-0.

Spain (0-1) started to show life after Olivia DeMerchant was shown a yellow card in the 60th minute, reducing Canada to 14 players for 10 minutes.

The Spanish pressure finally paid off when Rocio Garcia scored a try in the closing minutes.
