Edmonton has been awarded the 2013 Tim Hortons Brier to be held March 2-10 at Rexall Place.

Edmonton last hosted the Brier in 2005 when Tim Hortons began its sponsorship.

This year the chain extended its sponsorship agreement through 2014.

This will be the sixth Brier for Alberta's capital and the 13th for the province as a whole since the first Brier in 1927 in Toronto.

The only other cities to host a Brier six times are Calgary, Halifax, Saskatoon and Toronto.

In 2005, a record 281,985 fans attended the Brier.

Edmonton also has done well hosting other major curling events.

"The success of the 2005 Brier still resonates with curling fans across Canada as the largest attended curling event in history," said Greg Stremlaw, chief executive officer of the Canadian Curling Association.

Tickets for the 2013 Brier are expected to go on sale in February of 2012.

The winning team will represent Canada at the Ford World Men's Curling Championship, March 30-April 7 in Victoria.

Manitoba has won a leading 27 Briers, followed by Alberta at 25.

The 2012 Brier will be held March 3-11 at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon.
