Olympic champion Carol Huynh will lead a strong 17-member Canadian wrestling team at this fall's Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.
Joining Huynh, from Hazelton, B.C., will be two-time Olympic medallist Tonya Verbeek of Beamsville, Ont., and Arjan Bhullar of Richmond, B.C., a gold medallist at the Pan Am Games.
Huynh will wrestle in the 48-kilogram class, which she won at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and 2007 Pan Am Games. It will be her first Commonwealth Games.
Verbeek, who won silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics and bronze in Beijing, will compete in the 59-kilogram class. Other women on the team include Martine Dugrenier of Laval, Que., a two-time world champion in the 67-kilogram class and Justin Bouchard of Wetaskiwin, Alta. a 2009 world bronze medallist at 63 kilograms.
For Bhullar, who wrestles in the 120-kilogram class, the Delhi Games will be a homecoming. His father competed for prize money on the Indian wrestling circuit.
Tamara Medwidsky, Wrestling Canada's executive director, said the team has plenty of medal potential.
"We go into the Commonwealth Games with high expectations in terms of performance and anticipate that the experience gained in Delhi will be invaluable leading towards the preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games," Medwidsky said in a release.
Wrestling at the Games will feature 14 weight categories (seven freestyle and seven Greco-Roman) for men and seven freestyle categories for women. Competition will be held at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex from Oct. 5-10.
The Commonwealth Games, scheduled for Oct. 3-14, are expected to draw more than 4,000 athletes from 71 nations and territories.
