Mike McEwen triumphed in an all-Winnipeg BDO Canadian Open final on Sunday.

McEwen's rink beat Jeff Stoughton's team 5-2 in eight ends to win the $100,000 championship.

"In my opinion, other than a national championship, winning a Grand Slam is the pinnacle of our sport," said McEwen in a statement. "You're playing the 18 best teams in the world all at once, so anytime you can come out on top it's a really good feeling."

McEwen's rink scored two points in the second end when Stoughton's final shot came up short. That mistake allowed McEwen a draw to the eight-foot ring to open the scoring.

He never gave up that lead, adding a point in the fourth, sixth and seventh ends.

Stoughton's team only managed to score in the third and fifth ends.

Stoughton threatened to tie the game in the eighth end when his first shot removed two McEwen stones from the house, leaving him lying three.

McEwen was able to execute a tough double-takeout to run Stoughton out of stones and secure the 5-2 victory.

It was McEwen's second consecutive Canadian Open championship.

McEwen had defeated Sweden's Niklas Edin 8-2 in the semi-finals on Saturday to make the final. Stoughton had an 8-6 victory over Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., to play for the championship on the second leg of the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling.

McEwen did not lose a game all week. The win today gives him three Grand Slam titles for his career.
