Jordan Henderson signed a new long-term contract at Liverpool on Thursday, keeping the England midfielder at a club where he is expected to take over as captain next season.

Liverpool didn't disclose the length of Henderson's new deal. British media reported it is for five years, taking him through 2020.

After a slow start to his career at Anfield, Henderson has become of key member of Liverpool's side over the last two years. He is widely viewed as the natural replacement as captain for Steven Gerrard, who is leaving the club this summer to join Los Angeles Galaxy.

"A few years ago I had an opportunity to leave, but I always knew how big this club is and I wanted to stay here for as long as possible," said Henderson, who joined from Sunderland in 2011, "and nothing has changed since then.

"There is nowhere else I want to go."

Liverpool has also tied Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge to long-term contracts this season. Another star player, Raheem Sterling, has turned down a contract offer worth 100,000 pounds ($150,000) a week and says he will not be discussing a new deal until this summer at the earliest.

"The owners are committed to creating a team that can grow, improve and ultimately win together," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said.
