Nadir Ciftci scored a goal in regulation and the winner in penalty kicks as English side Portsmouth FC defeated FC Edmonton in 5-4 penalty kicks in exhibition soccer action Wednesday.
With the teams tied 1-1 after regulation, Portsmouth beat Edmonton goalkeeper Rein Baart on all five of its penalty attempts.
Edmonton scored on Portsmouth backup goalkeeper Liam O'Brien four times, with Antonio Raga missing his attempt.
It was the fourth game of a summer tune-up for newly formed FC Edmonton one year before it is set to join the North American Soccer League.
Edmonton defeated the Montreal Impact and Ottawa Fury, and lost 4-3 to top Chilean squad Colo-Colo earlier this summer.
Portsmouth was relegated to England's League Championship at the end of this season after seven straight seasons in the Premier League, due in part to recent financial difficulties. That ended a successful run that saw Portsmouth win the FA Cup in 2008 and make the Cup final again in 2010, where it lost 1-0 to Chelsea.
Portsmouth had only 14 players to draw from due to a rash of injuries.
A crowd of 8,792 at Commonwealth Stadium saw Edmonton surprise Portsmouth with a goal in the sixth minute. Matt Lam made a nice cross into the crease for Chris Lemire, who chipped the ball past Portsmouth keeper Jon Stewart.
O'Brien was substituted in for Stewart, who injured his knee on the play and had to be taken off on a stretcher
At the same time Portsmouth's Tom Kilbey left the match, leaving the English side with just one sub. Pete Gregory, who was questionable for the game with a calf injury, was forced into action.
O'Brien was very quickly tested in the Pompey net as a pass back from Stephen Jordan seemed to surprise him and nearly went into the net.
Edmonton had another quality chance in the 36th minute as Portsmouth captain Marc Wilson was assessed a yellow card, but the ensuing free kick sailed wide.
Portsmouth came quickly back to tie the match in the 38th minute as Matt Richie sent a short corner to David Nugent and he sent it in front to Ciftci, who had an easy tap in past Baart to make for a 1-1 game at the half.
Edmonton made a push to regain the lead in the 55th minute but a shot by Sam Lam sailed just over the crossbar.
Portsmouth looked to have scored a goal in the 68th minute as Nugent hammered a ball into the, net but it was instantly waived off due to goalkeeper interference.
Edmonton almost scored off a corner in the 90th minute as a header got past O'Brien, but the ball was safely headed away by Michael Brown.
Notes: This was the second edition of the Edmonton Cup. The first was staged last July as Argentina's River Plate defeated England's Everton 1-0. It was also held at Commonwealth to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Alberta Soccer Association... Portsmouth only had one player in its lineup who played in the 2008 FA Cup win, midfielder Michael Brown... Portsmouth concludes its first ever North American visit in Washington against DC United.
