Midfielder Atiba Hutchinson, a key member of the Canadian squad in its World Cup qualifying bid, could be facing more knee surgery.
Sky Sports reported Wednesday that the 28-year-old may need a second surgery on the knee he injured playing for Canada in the Gold Cup in June.
"In all probability, he must undergo surgery again and then I'm afraid I'll lose him for a while," PSV Eindhoven coach Fred Rutten told Sky Sports. "Atiba always gives 120 per cent and so we must analyse how well his rehabilitation process has gone."
The Brampton, Ont., native didn't practise Wednesday ahead of PSV's UEFA Europa League Group C opening game Thursday at home to Legia Warsaw.
The Canadian Soccer Association posted the Sky Sports link on its Facebook and Twitter pages, but a CSA official said there had been no confirmation on Hutchinson's injury status.
Hutchinson underwent surgery on his knee in late June and has made just one appearance for PSV this season.
He played 69 minutes in Canada's 4-1 win over St. Lucia in the team's opening World Cup qualifying game on Sept. 2 in Toronto, but didn't play in Canada's 3-0 victory at Puerto Rico four days later as coach Stephen Hart managed his minutes.
Canada is currently in the second stage of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.
The Canadians next play at St. Lucia on Oct. 7 and then host Puerto Rico on Oct. 11 at BMO Field in Toronto.
Should Canada advance, the next round of qualifying is expected to run from June to October, 2012.
