Jermain Defoe scored twice in the second half to give Sunderland a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC in an exhibition game Wednesday at BMO Field.

Jonathan Osorio gave the Major League Soccer team the lead with a goal early in the second half before Defoe went to work for the English Premier League team.

Toronto made liberal substitutions starting in the first half as Sunderland won for the first time after losing twice in its three-game North American tour in preparation for the EPL season that starts next month.

The game was a homecoming in a way for Defoe, who spent an injury-shortened season with Toronto last season before returning to England.

The sparse crowd booed when Defoe's name was called as the lineups were announced before the game and again when Defoe touched the ball early in the game.

His goals in the 66th and 70th minutes brought even more.

Osorio made no mistake in the second minute of the second half to give Toronto a 1-0 lead after Bright Dike kept the ball deep in Sunderland territory before passing off to Jay Chapman, whose shot attempt was partially blocked.

Defoe scored his first goal of the game on a shot from the edge of the box that was deflected by a Toronto player to tie the game.

He gave Sunderland the lead when he was wide open to receive a pass from Steven Fletcher for an easy goal.

Toronto controlled play in the opening minutes of the game and Jackson forced a save from Costel Pantilimon in the third minute.

Defoe missed with a header in the 11th minute on a cross from Billy Jones.

Fletcher had a chance for Sunderland in the 14th minute with a shot that rolled wide of the goal.

Sebastian Giovinco put a nice ball behind Sunderland's defenders in the 19th minute but Robbie Findley just failed to latch onto it.

About seven minutes later, Findley set up Giovinco, whose volley went over the bar.

Each team picked up a yellow card in the 28th minute – Sebastian Larrson of Sunderland and Daniel Lovitz of Toronto.

With an eye on the MLS schedule, Toronto FC coach Greg Vanney made eight substitutions in the 32nd minute.

In the ensuing minutes, each goalkeeper made a save with Pantilimon denying a header by Findley and Alex Bono, part of the wave of substitutes, stopped a 25-yard shot by Sunderland's Adam Johnson.

Bono also met Fletcher's challenge in the 41st minute.

Findley's cross was steered wide by Osorio just before the end of the goalless first half.
