Toronto FC acquires Andy Iro, Griffit from Columbus

Columbus Crew's Andy Iro, left, controls the ball as FC Dallas' Jeff Cunningham, right moves in during a MLS soccer game in Frisco, Texas on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008.

Toronto FC continued its roster makeover Friday, acquiring defender Andy Iro and midfielder Leandre Griffit from the Columbus Crew for midfielder Tony Tchani.

The move comes on the heels of two trades Thursday that saw Toronto acquire Canadian international midfielder Terry Dunfield and Jamaican international midfielder-forward Ryan Johnson.

"We needed help on defence and Andy is a defender that we have wanted to bring in for some time," Toronto FC coach Aron Winter said in a release. "After our deals yesterday we felt we could move a central midfielder of value to acquire an important piece. Leandre also provides us depth in the midfield."

Iro, 26, was drafted sixth overall by Columbus in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft. In four seasons with the Crew, the Englishman scored five goals and was part of Columbus' 2008 MLS Cup win.

Griffit, 27, is in his second MLS season. His career began with Amiens SC of France before moving to Southampton in England. He has also spent time with IF Elfsborg in Sweden and Crystal Palace back in England.

Tchani joined Toronto FC on April 1 from the New York Red Bulls as part of the deal for star Canadian striker Dwayne De Rosario.

To get Dunfield on Thursday, Toronto sent allocation money and future considerations to the Vancouver Whitecaps.

For Johnson, Toronto shipped forward Alan Gordon, midfielder Jacob Peterson and Canadian defender Nana Attakora to San Jose. Toronto also got allocation money and an international player slot (until January 2013).

Toronto FC's roster overhaul started last month when the club added designated players Torsten Frings and Danny Koevermans.
