Alyssa Lagonia, a fourth-year midfielder from Wilfrid Laurier University, is the Canadian Interuniversity Sport women's soccer player of the year.
Lagonia, from Kitchener, Ont., a former member of Canada's under-20 national team, is the second Golden Hawk to claim the Chantal Navert memorial award since its inception. Gigi Cignini was the inaugural recipient in 1995.
Now 22, Lagonia had five goals in 14 conference games in her fourth and final year with Laurier, leading her team to a 12-2 first-place finish in Ontario University Athletics.
Other individual awards handed out Wednesday night included rookie of the year to Alexandria Hoyte, a McGill midfielder from Laval, Que.; Cathleen Bleakney, a fullback with Acadia from Port Williams, N.S., the Student-Athlete Community Service award; and coach of the year to Graham Roxburgh from Trinity Western.
Hoyte is the second member of the Martlets and the first since Alanna Maloney in 1999 to capture CIS rookie-of-the-year honours. She was second in scoring with seven points, including three goals.
"Alexandria is a technically gifted central midfielder who possesses a great vision of the field, combines game awareness with good foot skills and can strike the ball from anywhere," said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot.
Bleakney is a fourth-year defender with the Axewomen and credited as a role model for the team, on campus and in the community.
"She is also an Academic All-Canadian student and even with all the time she spends as a varsity athlete and volunteer, she is always available for her teammates and coaches, she is the first one to offer to help in any situation," said Acadia athletic director Kevin Dickie.
Roxburgh has coached Trinity since 1998 and led them to a conference best 12-1-1 season. The Spartans were the highest-scoring team in the league with 31 goals in 14 games while placing second in defence with only seven goals allowed.
"Graham has set the standard for coaching excellence at TWU in a number of areas under our 'Complete Champion Approach'," said Murray Hall, director of athletics at Trinity Western.
"He has built a quality expert-based staff around him and recruited top student-athletes who fit the high performance, high-character culture he demands."
The 2011 CIS women's soccer championship is being hosted by McGill University starting Thursday.
The all-Canadian teams were also announced Wednesday.
