Your daily World Cup tip sheet for who’s playing when, and what to watch for. We'll deliver a new briefing the evening before every game day, highlighting the can't-miss match and which players to watch.
Match of the day: Germany vs. Portugal
Designated this tournament’s “Group of Death,” Group G features interesting squads from top to bottom. While the Ghana-U.S. matchup will be a battle, the sheer star power on the pitch in the Germany-Portugal game make it the main event. Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo is the Portuguese captain and focal point, fitting for the reigning World Player of the Year. His club teammates Fabio Coentrao and Pepe anchor a strong back four, while midfielder William Carvalho (Sporting Lisbon) is an emerging talent rumoured to be a transfer target for a number of big European teams. Germany counters with a balanced lineup that features the backbone of a stacked Bayern Munich team – goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, defenders Philipp Lahm and Jerome Boateng and midfielders Toni Kroos, Mario Goetze and Bastian Schweinsteiger. Ageless striker Miroslav Klose (Lazio) will be playing in his fourth career World Cup. He’s 36 years old, but money in the big games with 14 career goals at the tournament.
Player to watch: Portugal’s Ronaldo
The Portuguese star has a lot of things: chiselled good looks, ripped abs, magic feet, a supermodel girlfriend (feel free to google Irina Shayk) and a pile of club and individual accolades. You know he’d love to lead his country to the most important trophy in soccer and cement his place as one of the game’s all-time greats.
