Mosaid Technologies Inc. said Thursday it has started patent infringement litigation against 17 companies, including Research In Motion and Intel Corp. , alleging they have used its Wi-Fi technology without a licence.
The suit was filed on March 16 in the eastern district of Texas in the U.S. District Court, Mosaid said in a news release.
"Since 2008, we have licensed our portfolio of wireless patents and applications to 15 companies that have recognized the value of this intellectual property," said chief executive John Lindgren.
"We believe that all companies offering products that implement the WiFi standard require a license to our wireless patents," he said.
Other tech companies named in the suit include Marvell Semiconductor, Inc., Ralink Technology Corp., Wasp Barcode Technologies, Ltd., and Venture Research, Inc.
Mosaid has more than 2,000 patents covering semiconductors and telecommunications systems. The company also develops semiconductor memory technology.
In its latest quarter ended Jan. 31, Mosaid said it earned $7.4-million, up from $2.2-million a year ago.
The profit amounted to 61 cents per share, compared with a profit of 21 cents per share a year ago.
Revenue in what was the company's third quarter totalled $20.2-million, up from $17.7-million.
