Descartes Systems Group Inc. reported a stronger-than-expected return to third-quarter profit yesterday, helped by higher revenue and lower expenses.

The provider of supply-chain management software and services posted a profit of $629,000 (U.S.) or 2 cents a share in the quarter ended Oct. 31, compared with a year-ago loss of $2.7-million or 7 cents.

It was the third straight quarter of profit for Waterloo, Ont.-based Descartes, which launched an aggressive restructuring in 2004 that cut more than a third of its work force and closed offices around the world.

Revenue edged up to $11.5-million from $11-million. DSG (TSX) rose 25 cents (Canadian) to $3.
