Sheriff Bigby Wolf wasn’t always a lawman. He used to be the Big Bad Wolf, from the fables.

Sheriff Bigby Wolf wasn't always a lawman. He used to be the Big Bad Wolf, and in the opening sequence to "Faith", the first episode of The Wolf Among Us, Bigby comes face to face with the Woodsman from Red Riding Hood. Later, he comes across one of the three little pigs sleeping in his apartment. He's still trying to atone for his actions while in the "homeland."

Based on the Fables comics from writer-creator Bill Willingham, The Wolf Among Us (recently launched on Apple iOS devices) comes from Telltale Games, which reinvigorated the adventure game genre with last year's adaptation of The Walking Dead. The world of Fables is set in New York, where characters from fairy tale and legend live among the humans thanks to glamours which mask their true identities.

It looks like a comic, cell-shaded and colourful, with strong lines, and the unique blend of various myths and folk tales that make up Willingham's series is well represented here. And while the characters are fanciful, the problems they face are as mundane as the world they're now living in.

You use the keyboard to move and mouse clicks to interact with the environment and select your dialogue. Combat requires quick screen taps (or mouse movements and button presses on desktop), but Wolf is more about the dialogue choices you'll make when in conversation with other characters. That's how your particular decisions, their morality and consequences, will impact the way the rest of the story unfolds.

This story is a mystery, of course, and with excellent writing and voice acting, the initial installment of The Wolf Among Us will have you anxiously awaiting the next chapter.

Developer: Telltale Games; Platform: iOS, OS X, Windows
