On July 16, 1969, carrying astronauts Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr., Apollo 11 launched from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. The eventual success of the Apollo 11 mission paved the way for dozens more manned space missions in the 40 years that followed.
