OTTAWA, Nov. 8 - Telesat Canada is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the launch of the Anik A1 satellite this weekend. On Nov. 9, 1972, Canada became the first country to place a commercial communications satellite in geostationary orbit, a feat that enabled round-the-clock satellite broadcasting across the country. Over the past 30 years, Telesat has launched 13 satellites, making the company one of the top 10 satellite companies in the world. In late December, Telesat will launch its 14th satellite, Nimiq 2, a direct-broadcast satellite. Bell ExpressVu will be Nimiq 2's exclusive customer.
