Mojo
- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
- Warner
On the first album of new material in eight years with the Heartbreakers, the southerner Tom Petty sings, not for the first time, about running the dark highway - "We run it for money, we run it for music." One suspects the latter explains Mojo, a sprawling record - at 15 tracks, a little too long - that investigates the blues in various ways. There are Dylan blues, Chicago-style romps, gliding Okie shuffles and a jazzy Allmanesque jam ( First Flash of Freedom) that concerns a beginner's acid trip. The carefree Petty, at this stage of the game, isn't worried about hits. Like Big Bill Broonzy and others, he's found the key to the highway, and he's billed out and bound to go.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers play Calgary, Tuesday; Edmonton, Wednesday; Saskatoon, Friday; Winnipeg, Saturday; and Toronto, Aug. 25.
