Leadership Lab guidelines

The relaunched Leadership Lab is an op-ed column dedicated to providing career advice and insights for employees of all backgrounds and all stages of life. The column is also dedicated to showcasing contributors who themselves are diverse in ethnicity, perspective and background. Whether you are a writer, student, c-suite executive, business owner, author or consultant, we encourage you to apply if you have something to say about the world of work.

What you need to know:

Potential contributors apply for a one-month Leadership Lab residency position where they will contribute one column a week for four weeks. There is an honourarium of $400 (Canadian) for the four columns. We understand not all corporate contributors may be allowed to personally accept honourariums. If you would like to waive the honourarium, please let us know. Preference will be given to Canadian contributors.

A successful Leadership Lab application consists of a strong writing sample that showcases your expertise and tone, and a clear idea of what topics you'd be tackling in your columns. In particular we are looking for unexpected ideas, an underrepresented perspective, deep expertise or timely discussion starters.

Here are some leadership labs we thought were successful:

How to apply:

E-mail your application to globecareers@globeandmail.com. In the subject line, be sure to put "Leadership Lab Application". If you are hoping to time your submissions to a particular month, please include the month in your subject line as well. Please include:

  • 1-2 paragraphs detailing your background and a subject of expertise that you'd want to write about.
  • 2-4 story ideas you might potentially write about. 1-3 sentences for each idea is enough.
  • 1-2 writing samples of published or unpublished work in the style and tone of your expected posts, either as a link or attached as a word document.

Other details:

Include a contact number where you can be reached during the day.

Columns should be no longer than 750 words.

Leadership Lab does not publish pieces that have already been published elsewhere, but feel free to write on a topic you've blogged about in the past or adapt a chapter from a book you have written.

If your application is accepted, you should hear from The Globe within one month. You will not be contacted if it has not been accepted. Your application is governed by our Terms and Conditions. Additionally, if you are accepted into the program, you will need to sign an agreement.

Columnists for the month are typically confirmed 1-2 weeks before the start of the month. Subsequent submissions will be considered for the following month.

If you have already been accepted as a contributor once, you are welcome to re-apply the following year. We will consider you once per year.

If you are not accepted, we encourage you to try again with a different topic. There is no limit to the amount of applications you can send.

Anonymity and pseudonyms are not granted.

The total honourarium for four columns is $400.
