Mercedes-Benz MaybachMercedes-Benz

What is it

The new super-luxurious, top-of-the-line S-Class sports a familiar three-pointed badge, but an unfamiliar name: Mercedes-Maybach. Such is the careful re-birth of the Maybach name, resurrecting itself from a unique, but unsuccessful marque to a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz denoting the ultimate in sybaritic exclusivity.

Signature feature

Mercedes-Benz promises the M-M S600 will be the "world's quietest production sedan," obviously targeting the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce, though former corporate cousin Tesla may dispute that title with its all-electric Model S. And yes, even quieter than the recently launched Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, which the firm had then declared as the quietest car in the world.

What else is new

The new Mercedes-Maybach S600 will extend the body and the pampering quotient of the new generation S-Class, with bodywork stretched more than 20 extra centimeters to allow rear seat passengers an even larger cocoon/mobile office. Extra pampering will include a passenger seat that moves and folds even closer to the front dash, a footrest, and automatically extending and adjusting rear seat-belt buckles, with an illuminated tongue.

Under the hood

Bringing the V12 engine back to the latest S-Class model, this behemoth of an engine sports six-litres of twin-turbo smoothness, its monstrous 612 lb-ft available from 1,900 rpm.

When can we buy it, and for how much

Spring 2015, with only a handful of special-order models earmarked for Canada, starting at just over US$200,000 south of the border, compared to its last US$379,050 American starting price for the Maybach 57.

Cool quotient: 3/5
