Skiers salivate at the thought of 10 centimetres of fresh powder. But if you're hopping in and out of the car all day, that fluff has turned into gravel soup. Instead of grinding your teeth, invest in a good floor mat that collects water, salt and gravel. Not only will your shoes and pants stay clean, time spent vacuuming will be reduced.

Cheap mats with Hello Kitty or sexy pin up girls are cute but never stay in place, so save those and the carpet mats for the summer.

Features to consider include side walls to trap the water, ridges to raise your feet out of the water and how the mats stay locked in place.

The most expensive mats are the best. I tested and tossed the Tinkerbell mats but kept the WeatherTech custom FloorLiner designed for my car. The tray fits like a glove under and up beyond the gas pedal – eliminating that pond of water that drips from your toe. And, because it fits so tight, it won't slip out of place.

WeatherTech FloorLiners are not cheap. I bought a set that included the front and back rows for $227. Just the front pair is $139 but the extra mat that covers the back row floor was worth the investment. Free shipping eased the cost.
