Barring the utterly unexpected, Honda's Civic will finish 2014 as Canada's best-selling car for the 17th consecutive year (51,936 through the first three-quarters). But the race for No. 2 is sizzling. Hyundai has sold 40,060 Elantras and holds a slim 1,025-vehicle leave over the No. 3 Toyota Corolla (39,035).
Hyundai wants the Elantra to hold onto that No. 2 position and is offering many incentives to potential buyers. The Elantra, according to a full-market analysis by the pricing service Unhaggle.com, has the largest November cash incentive in Canada: $4,635 or 29 per cent of the $15,999 manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for the 2015 L version with manual transmission. That offer should give a boost to Elantra sales, down nearly 10 per cent in 2014 through the first three quarters.
That's not the end of the deal-making, not by a long shot. The average cash incentive in Canada is $1,937 (excluding pickup trucks and commercial vehicles). Just looking at the average can be misleading, too.
Chrysler, Kia and Dodge are offering average cash incentives of $3,433, $2,728 and $2,306, respectively, notes the report. On the luxury side, Jaguar, Acura and Lincoln lead the pack with $6,212, $4,148 and $3,237 in average incentives.
Unhaggle CEO Andrew Tai says car makers in Canada are fiercely fighting for market share, and that explains the record incentives. Indeed, many car makers offer more than a simple, single sales sweetener. Loyalty bonuses for existing owners and low-interest deals for financing or leasing are also commonplace here in November.
For example, cash incentives on the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 GLK250 BlueTec ($43,900) can be stacked with 1.9 per cent financing for 48 or 60 months. According to Unhaggle, the average 48-month finance rate in November is 2.2 per cent and for 60 months it's 2.43 per cent.
Hyundai with its popular Elantra is hardly alone is driving sales with appealing offers.
