Rumour has it that Ford Motor is struggling to decide the fate of the Ford Flex crossover wagon.
Ford, of course, has a big problem with the Flex - not enough people are buying. As a family hauler, the boxy, polarizing Flex is a dud. It looks too weird for suburbanites and its sticker price is too expensive, too. At least it's too expensive compared to a minivan like the Toyota Sienna.
So the vultures are circling over the Flex. Ford executives say the Flex has carved out a strong following, but they are just defending their investment and hoping for a miracle.
Ford does not want to kill the Flex, but something needs to be done. This year sales will not even amount to half the 100,000 units Ford had hoped to move each year when the Flex was launched three years ago.
But because the Flex is built on the same underpinnings as the Lincoln MKT, as well as the Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS sedans, this particular crossover can be produced at a relatively low price.
All this suggests a deal, and sure enough there is a good one on the Flex: Ford Employee Pricing - essentially dealer invoice pricing - that can be combined with nearly $5,000 more in incentives. Together they make the Flex an interesting deal.
