Casino Operator Stocks Q4 Earnings Review: Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:WYNN) Shines

StockStory - Tue Apr 16, 4:56AM CDT

The end of an earnings season can be a great time to discover new stocks and assess how companies are handling the current business environment. Let’s take a look at how Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:WYNN) and the rest of the casino operator stocks fared in Q4.

Casino operators enjoy limited competition because gambling is a highly regulated industry. These companies can also enjoy healthy margins and profits. Have you ever heard the phrase ‘the house always wins’? Regulation cuts both ways, however, and casinos may face stroke-of-the-pen risk that suddenly limits what they can or can't do and where they can do it. Furthermore, digitization is changing the game, pun intended. Whether it’s online poker or sports betting on your smartphone, innovation is forcing these players to adapt to changing consumer preferences, such as being able to wager anywhere on demand.

The 9 casino operator stocks we track reported a slower Q4; on average, revenues beat analyst consensus estimates by 1.5%. Inflation progressed towards the Fed's 2% goal at the end of 2023, leading to strong stock market performance. The start of 2024 has been a bumpier ride, as the market switches between optimism and pessimism around rate cuts due to mixed inflation data, and while some of the casino operator stocks have fared somewhat better than others, they collectively declined, with share prices falling 1% on average since the previous earnings results.

Best Q4: Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:WYNN)

Founded by the former Mirage Resorts CEO, Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:WYNN) is a global developer and operator of high-end hotels and casinos, known for its luxurious properties and premium guest services.

Wynn Resorts reported revenues of $1.84 billion, up 83.1% year on year, topping analyst expectations by 5.9%. It was a stunning quarter for the company, with an impressive beat of analysts' earnings estimates. However, we note its earnings received a one-time boost from an income tax benefit related to the valuation allowance on certain deferred tax assets. Nevertheless, its revenue outperformed Wall Street's estimates, driven by strong customer spending in Macau and Las Vegas.

"The strong momentum we built throughout 2023 continued during the fourth quarter with Adjusted Property EBITDAR reaching a new all-time record. These impressive results highlight our team’s relentless focus on delivering five-star hospitality, which continues to elevate our properties above our peers as the destinations of choice for luxury guests in Las Vegas, Boston and Macau," said Craig Billings, CEO of Wynn Resorts, Limited.
