Is your sporty sense tingling? It must be all the athletic-inspired looks on the spring runways.

Prada, Alexander Wang and Marni (above) turned to workout wear for inspiration this season, even sending – gasp! – sport sandals paired with tube socks down the catwalk.

Real way

A better way to incorporate the trend into your workaday wardrobe is an updated take on the varsity jacket, a fresh outerwear alternative to the standard trenches and raincoats.

Athletic jackets usually hit just above the hip but this newer take on the silhouette is longer and shapelier with a nipped-in waist.

Tricky textures like the encrusted finish on Marni’s haute version are awe-inspiring and special-occasion-ready. For everyday wear, a melton-wool jacket with with contrasting sleeves in leather or vinyl is a classic.

If your outerwear is casual and athletic, dress up your clothing and accessories with a structured handbag and polished slacks.
