Soft-boiled eggs and soldiers – strips of buttered, yolk-dipping toast – is a brilliant British breakfast. But the way it's presented needs a rethink. At least, that is, according to Toronto designer Simon Ford.
He ate the meal many times growing up (his parents are from the Teesside region in Northern England), and loved the savoury, mouth-melting flavours. But, while studying furniture-making at Sheridan College a couple of years ago, he thought there should be a better way to serve the different components than the typical disjointed series of wee cups and mismatched plates.
Instead, his Nester tray, co-created with classmates Courtney Black, Kevin Jones and Jesse Wilson, is an elegant composition in Canadian maple. A broad, shallow platter holds the toast, with two little perches for the soft-centred eggs.
