One captivating image a day, the reason it was chosen and how you can shoot similar pictures.

Photo tip for Sept. 29: By using a long lens the photographer is able to compress the scene making the pattern of the wooden dividers more pronounced. The girl in the lower left helps break up the pattern giving a point of interest to the image. Try using a long lens like a 300mm or above to make objects appear closer to each other.

Photo tip for Sept. 28: By shooting on a downward angle the photographer uses the reflection in the water as a backdrop for the goose keeping the image very clean. The colour in the reflections work at framing the goose brining the readers eye into the subject.

Photo tip for Sept. 27: There is some really beautiful light happening in this image. The opening in the trees perfectly frames the woman and her dog bringing the readers eye into the middle of the frame where the shafts of sunlight add helping to focus the readers attention.

Photo tip for Sept. 26: The bright red and yellow of the ride contrast against the sky making the image pop. Also the negative space on the left is balanced off nicely with the ride.

Photo tip for Sept. 23: Kaarina Venalainen visited the Everdale Organic Farm in Hillsburgh, Ont., one August morning to observe the hand-harvesting. She captured this photo of radishes fresh from the ground and submitted it online in response to an assignment for photos of the harvest. Why we chose it: The shallow depth of field really keeps the focus on the radishes and emphasizes the dirt on the man's hands. The light coming in from the side adds some great contrast to the image.

Each weekday, our photo editors will select one compelling image for prominent play in the newspaper. On Friday, we'll publish in the newspaper our favourite reader photo on a weekly theme. This week's assignment: the home.
