RCMP say a former employee of an energy services company in northern Alberta is facing firearms offences after shots were fired inside the facility.

Investigators say the man surrendered after a three-hour standoff Tuesday night at the Halliburton plant in Clairmont, north of Grande Prairie.

Two employees had been hiding inside the building but had no contact with the gunman and it appears he didn't know they were there.

Police say the suspect called another employee on a cellphone and officers were able to negotiate with the man.

He then turned himself in and officers seized a handgun and assault-style rife.

Police say gunfire damaged some of the facility, including windows and a water line.

"Fortunately, no Halliburton employees, police or other members of the public were injured in the incident and no shots were fired by the RCMP," said Insp. Gibson Glavin.

The 58-year-old man from Grande Prairie was to appear in court Wednesday. His name has not yet been released.
