Staff at the Toronto Wildlife Centre clean the oiled ducks. Once deemed healthy, they will be released back into the wild.

Workers from the Toronto Wildlife Centre are trying to rescue a number of ducks who've been covered by oil that spilled into a city creek.

They say more than 20 ducks have been rescued so far, with workers looking to cover eight kilometres of Mimico Creek as they search for more "oiled birds."

The wildlife centre says once the birds have been cleaned and deemed healthy, they'll be released back into the wild.

The oil in the creek is believed to have come from a truck that was carrying the substance when it crashed at Highway 401 and Highway 427 on Monday night.

Ontario Provincial Police initially said the spill was contained but Toronto Fire confirmed the mineral oil could be traced back to the crash.

Workers with the city of Toronto have placed booms at the site and the mouth of the creek to prevent the oil from spreading.
