More than 20 people are homeless after a fire Saturday morning tore through an apartment building in Halifax.

The Canadian Red Cross says the blaze began shortly after midnight on the upper level of the three-storey building.

The fire gutted most of the 12 apartments in one section of the building.

But firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading to the rest of the 48-unit complex.

Red Cross disaster volunteers are helping some of the tenants with emergency clothing and food.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
