A dozen people are homeless after a pre-dawn fire gutted a two-storey residence in downtown Fredericton, N.B., on Sunday.

The Canadian Red Cross says the wood-frame building suffered significant heat, smoke and water damage from the blaze.

One woman is seriously injured after being found unconscious in a ground-floor apartment and being rescued by firefighters.

She was taken to hospital in Halifax.

In a tweet sent this morning, the Fredericton Fire Department said only two of the three resident cats survived the blaze.

The investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
