A Mountie in northwestern Saskatchewan has been charged after a prisoner was allegedly assaulted.

RCMP say Const. Kelly Brennan, from St. Walburg, is charged with assault and assault causing bodily harm.

A complaint of excessive force was made in April 2011 regarding the processing of a prisoner earlier that month at the Turtleford Detachment.

An investigation was started and the information was sent to the Saskatchewan Public Prosecutions office for review.

RCMP say Const. Brennan has been served a summons and is scheduled to appear in St. Walburg court on March 20.

The 42-year-old officer remains on active duty and is also facing an internal RCMP code of conduct investigation.
