A winter storm moving through Atlantic Canada has closed some schools in Newfoundland and knocked out power in New Brunswick and P.E.I.

NB Power says 24,000 customers were affected by the outage, with the bulk being in the Fredericton area.

The Anglophone East School District has closed schools for the day because of the weather system that has dumped heavy snow.

People across Prince Edward Island also lost power due to the snowfall and high winds, while residents in parts of northern Nova Scotia were without power.

The English School District in eastern Newfoundland says classes are cancelled, but that could change if the weather improves.

Environment Canada was calling for up to 20 centimetres of snow in parts of the region.
