Drivers who venture into downtown Toronto this morning are facing unexpected road closures due to watermain breaks and a sinkhole, 680News is reporting.

A water main break on University Avenue north of Dundas Street caused a road closure and has flooded the basement of a University of Toronto research building.

Fire crews are on the scene.

Bay Street is closed in both directions between Richmond Street and Queen Street West because of a water main break that caused a sinkhole.

Drivers can't turn south on Bay from Queen or north on Bay from Richmond.

Water main breaks are often caused by rapidly fluctuating temperatures. The freeze-thaw cycle damages the underground pipes, causing them to burst.
