A tentative deal has been reached to avoid a strike that could have affected thousands of students at Toronto`s public and Catholic schools.

A settlement was reached late Tuesday between Stock Transportation and the union representing about 600 school bus drivers.

The two sides had faced a strike deadline of 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, but CAW Local 4268 president Debra Montgomery announced a deal just before 11 p.m.

More than 4,000 students attend Toronto public and Catholic schools but it was unclear just how many students would have been affected by a strike.

No details of the tentative agreement have been released although wages were believed to be one of the key factors in the labour dispute.

The drivers voted 93 per cent in favour of strike action if necessary, in order to reach a fair and equitable settlement. Negotiations have been ongoing since March.
