Firefighters respond to a fire at the Winchester Hotel in Toronto’s Cabbagetown on Wednesday.
The historic Winchester Hotel was still standing late Wednesday night after emergency crews quickly doused a fire that had broken out in the top of the building.
Fire crews were called to the hotel, at the corner of Winchester and Parliament streets, at 9:39 p.m. for the two-alarm blaze after someone spotted flames coming from the roof, police said. By just after 10 p.m., it had been put out.
A Toronto Fire captain at the scene told a local television station that tarps were laid out in the building to minimize the impact of the fire.
There were no injuries, and police said it was too early to determine damages. Parliament Street was closed for about two hours, police said.
The hotel was built in the 1880s by architect Thomas Kennedy, but now houses a Tim Hortons, Subway restaurant and upscale grill house.
