It is a strange version of Christmas indeed with the overly generous $4-billion payment to the automotive industry without an adequate enforcement of changes in the way the failed leadership of these companies does business (Harper, McGuinty Pledge $4-Billion For Auto Makers - online, Dec. 20). That payment amounts to roughly $125 per person in this country. Imagine what that sort of investment could do to reduce pollution or stimulate innovation for new industries and a 21st-century economy. Sort of like an extra monthly car payment from every family in Canada for a car that we will never get to drive.

We should not reward failure in an industry that has not only distorted and crippled our economy but has devastated our global environment. You cannot bail out mediocrity.
