I mourn with John Doyle (Requiem For A Crucial CBC Program -- Review, April 5) about CBC's appalling decision to kill Opening Night. For Canada to express itself as a nation from coast to coast to coast, our national broadcaster has special responsibilities to Canadian arts, culture and talent. Our national arts companies (ballet, opera, symphony, theatre) and institutions such as the National Arts Centre, find it more and more difficult to tour their exceptional productions to the regions of Canada. CBC used to tour such work electronically for the benefit of all Canadians. This is a sad day for the arts in Canada and another nail in the coffin of what should be our most important and beloved national cultural institution.
