Dr. Robert Thirsk, Chancellor, University of Calgary

The University of Calgary is thrilled to announce the appointment of alumnus and former astronaut Dr. Robert Thirsk (BSc '76, LLD '09) as our chancellor.

Robert Thirsk joined the University of Calgary as its 13th chancellor on July 2, 2014.

During a long career with the Canadian Space Agency, Dr. Thirsk represented his country in space on two milestone missions. His passion for space, research and education has engaged many Canadian young people in science. He is also an adjunct faculty member at the International Space University in Strasbourg, France and a board member of several social purpose organizations.

Dr. Thirsk's vision, innovative thinking and deep commitment to education and community align perfectly with Eyes High — the university's bold and ambitious strategy to become one of Canada's top five universities by 2016. As chancellor, he will play a leadership role in strengthening the university's engagement in Calgary and beyond, and in driving the university to new heights of success.

Dr. Thirsk will represent the university at ceremonial occasions, preside over convocation and chair Senate, a dedicated group of volunteers whose mission is to deeply connect the university and the community.

The University of Calgary is a leading Canadian university located in the nation's most enterprising city. The university has a clear strategic direction to become one of Canada's top five research universities by 2016, where innovative teaching and groundbreaking research go hand in hand, and where we fully engage the communities we both serve and lead.
