Sun Peaks Resort

If you're a powder hound, the words "road trip" conjure up images of skis or snowboards on the roof and a happy carload of passengers headed for a snowy destination. In B.C., it's easy to put together an itinerary that lets you experience the extraordinary diversity of the province's ski resorts.

If you're coming from out of province, you'll likely be flying into Vancouver, Kelowna, Kamloops or Calgary. Any one of these cities makes a great launching pad to winter adventure.

From Vancouver, drive 90 minutes north along the spectacular Sea-to-Sky Highway to Whistler Blackcomb, host of the 2010 Winter Olympics. When you're ready to move on from the continent's largest ski area, continue along Highway 99 for three hours with Kamloops as your destination, making sure to stop at Pemberton for hot chocolate and snacks to keep everyone happy.

Kamloops is home to Sun Peaks, where you'll find three mountains to explore and a ski-in, ski-out village. Next stop? Continue east along Highway 1 to Revelstoke and then on to Kicking Horse for incomparable vertical thrills. Another two hours from Kicking Horse is Panorama, with more big vertical and great glade skiing.

From Kamloops, Highway 97 is your path to Silver Star, Big White and Apex – three areas well known for their dry, light powder. Head southeast to the Kootenay region, where you'll need at least a week to explore the unique and charming resorts of Whitewater, Kimberley and Fernie.

Now's the time to put on the winter tires, check webcams and road conditions on DriveBC.com and start putting together your road trip playlist.
