Nothing beats putting on grass nurtured with tender loving care

1. THE PERFECT GREEN

Nothing beats putting on grass nurtured with tender loving care

It's a golfer's dream – the opportunity to putt on perfectly manicured greens.

Early mornings through the dew, or late in the evening as shadows grow long; both are great experiences. And, when the putting surfaces are rolling true and free of imperfections, even better.

The National Golf Club of Canada is Canada's toughest course, with a demanding membership that insists of spectacular conditioning and greens. But superintendent Chris Dew and his team are up to the challenge.

"At The National, we have set standards," he says. "We want our greens to reward a good shot and threaten your nerves when faced with a tricky downhill putt."

The course has constantly been ranked as the best in the country. The delicate grooming of the putting surfaces allow for all who play to experience PGA Tour-like conditions.

Unlike the rest of the course, greens are generally mowed daily. They're also rolled to increase speed.

"Maintaining high performance greens is not an easy task. They require a great deal of attention, labour, science and love," Dew says. "Yes, if you love your greens, they will love you back."

2. THE ULTIMATE TIMEPIECE

Attention to detail is what fine watchmaking is all about

An elegant watch has been an accessorizing staple for men and women since, well, time immemorial.

But, there's one brand that stands above the rest: Tag Heuer. The company known, among other things, for the unique Professional Golf Watch goes beyond the norm with its design, materials and craftsmanship.

One good example is the Aquaracer, a timepiece designed for men and women for sporty or casual occasions. It boasts a ceramic bezel and sapphire crystal glass for supreme scratch-resistance, high-readability in the dark, and water resistance to 500 metres.

Tag Heuer works meticulously on designing its models ergonomically, producing the cases, dials and movements, and assembling the watches in its Swiss workshops.

Design and attention to detail is everything.  "A watch should be comfortable, perfectly fit the wrist, and match the style of our client," the company says.

3. A MARRIAGE MADE IN HEAVEN

A smooth cigar makes a superb companion to a glass of Scotland's favourite single malt

A glass of The Original Glenmorangie is one of life's pleasures, but it doesn't always have to be enjoyed solo. A good meal, a mild cigar, even a round of golf – they all go well with a "wee dram" of the finest whisky.

"My favourite pairing is with foie gras," explains Bill Lumsden, head of distilling and whisky creation at Glenmorangie. "I'm slightly selfish, but that delicate flavor and creamy texture goes so very well with The Original."

Lumsden, a Glenmorangie ambassador, thinks a Montecristo No. 3 or 4 cigar is a delightful pairing with the smooth aroma and taste of The Original. Both the cigars blend tastes that complement the whisky, such as vanilla, creating a perfect harmony.

And then there's golf.

"Golf and whisky: It's very traditional, especially in Scotland," says Lumsden. "We're not playing in the blazing sunshine most of the year, so having a wee dram goes very nicely with it."

Delicate, smooth and timeless are apt descriptions of all of these finer things in life. No wonder they go together so well.
