Refresh your space, and set the mood for fall and winter, by swapping pillows, curtains and throws.DECORIUM

With fall and winter approaching, our nesting instinct has us turning our attention from the garden to the inside of our home. As the days turn cooler, we're craving a more soothing, comforting space to spend the long nights in.

"It's the time of year where we live in the home, and we want the home to be warmer and cozier," says Adriana Glait, an interior designer with Decorium, a furniture and décor showroom in Toronto.

From updating your interior colours and fabrics to incorporating the latest style trends, there are plenty of quick, easy ways to make your home more inviting for the season. Here, Ms. Glait shares her tips for welcoming the quieter seasons with a refreshed interior space just begging to be enjoyed.

Entrance

"The first thing to think of is the entrance," says Ms. Glait, who recommends changing your area rug and choosing patterns that are tuned into fall trends. "Right now the trend is geometric," she adds, noting to look for autumn colours, such as reds, greens and yellows. Indeed, Ms. Glait points out, during fall and winter, we spend so much time inside, incorporating these colours is a great way to bring the outdoors in.

The quickest way to refresh and update any room, of course, is a vase of the season's best blooms. "It gives you a different look and is a less expensive way to update the home without changing everything," says Ms. Glait.

Living/Family Room

Swapping pillows and throws is another quick and simple way to update your space. "For fall, you can choose fabrics that are more luxurious, more comfortable to the touch," says Ms. Glait. "Right now velvet is one of the most popular fabrics. That and faux fur are great options for this time of year, when you want to sit on the sofa, relax and snuggle, and at the same time be a little more sophisticated." For instance, a faux-fur pillow instantly transforms a living space into a cozy, fall-ready room.

Drapes are another way to change your space. "It's a little more expensive, but drapes can make a big difference," says Ms. Glait. "In fall and winter, your drapes can be heavier – such as velvet panels, or silk."

As with your colour scheme, artwork is another great way to bring the outdoors in. "We live inside, and with artwork, you can choose landscapes and colours – blues, greens – to give you a feeling of the great outdoors," says Ms. Glait.

Similar to the entrance, changing up your area rugs can transform your living space too. "You can choose 100 per cent wool to give you the heat that you're looking for this time of year," says Ms. Glait.

Bedroom

Colours and textiles carry over to the bedroom as well, where curtains, throws and artwork set the mood for fall and winter. "Bedding too can make your room more inviting," says Ms. Glait, who adds that choosing bedding with different patterns or colours can get you in the mood for fall. "Instead of a summer neutral you can do a warmer colour like a red or mustard or green – all the earth tones are coming back now," says Ms. Glait, who points to two colours in particular that are big for fall.

"Spicy mustard is one of the top colours for autumn. It's not for everybody but it's a beautiful colour. Another colour that's good for any season is navy blue. It's becoming one of the new neutrals."

Whether it's a simple bouquet or an entire room overhaul, there are plenty of fun ways to incorporate fall colours and trends into your home to welcome the new season.
