Guides in period costumes share stories about Prince Edward Island’s rich history with visitors to Charlottetown.

When it comes to Canada's birth as a nation, Prince Edward Island marks its beginning. The Charlottetown Conference, held September 1, 1864, remains one of the most important events in Canadian history. With its sesquicentennial this year, there's a party going on and we're all invited. And rather than learn about the past from behind objects kept behind glass in a museum, Prince Edward Island celebrates history by reliving it through touch, taste, sight, and sound, from dinners in period costumes to architectural tours by horse and carriage.

Dull isn't an option. History lessons here are vibrant and lively, full of tales featuring raiders and rogues, visionaries and rebels. If events in the past had played out differently, Prince Edward Island might be known as
St. John's Island instead. But in 1799, it was renamed in honour of Edward, Duke of Kent (Queen Victoria's father). The Island is rife with stories, mostly true with a few myths and legends thrown into the mix. Come and walk in the steps of history that lead up to the province becoming the birthplace of Confederation. It makes for a memorable trip when you leap into the past through its many events and experiences.
