The Action: Less than a five-minute walk from Riverdale Park, schools, shops and subway station on the Danforth, this detached brick house was swarmed by about 200 house hunters during weekend open houses in January. There were nine offers submitted, and although one bidder soon dropped their offer, the competition pushed the final price $227,100 over asking.

What They Got: Nearly all aspect of this over century-old house is traditional with a grand foyer upholding hardwood floors and trims, a living room with bay windows, a dining room with plate rails and beamed ceilings and an eat-in kitchen with a maid's staircase to the second floor.

The two floors above house six bedrooms, including a fireside master suite on the second floor, and one of two full bathrooms.

There is a basement and main floor sunroom addition with walkouts to the the 32-by 83-foot lot, south-facing backyard, garage and mutual driveway.

The Agent's Take: "The location is pretty fantastic," agent Lina Risi said. "It's on one of the premier streets in Riverdale, just two blocks from the subway, Riverdale Park and smack dab in the middle of great schools, like Montcrest School on Broadview."

Architectural details were the allure of this property. "The stateliness of it was special: it was a grand old dame that was untouched in a raw state, so that makes it quite favourable," says Ms. Risi, who mentions the maid staircase as a highlight in this and her own home.

"It was a feature in the early 1900s, so you don't see many houses now with second staircases, so it's always nice to see a feature like that."
