Klipfolio created this dashboard for the first prime minister leaders’ debate on August 6.

An Ottawa startup is using Thursday's election debate to showcase its dashboard technology, which displays real-time public reaction to the politicians' performances.

Klipfolio's tool, which you can access here, will show how viewers react to each leader throughout the debate, according to sentiment shown in social media comments, blogs and online news articles.

The company created a similar dashboard for the first national leaders' debate on Aug. 6.

"In the analysis coming out of the first debate, people concluded that there was no outright winner, but when we tallied the numbers up, it showed there was a clear winner in terms of sentiment," says Klipfolio chief marketing officer Mychelle Mollot.

"It showed that the Green Party's Elizabeth May won the sentiment battle. There were more positive reactions to her, and fewer negative ones. The NDP's Thomas Mulcair, on the other hand, had the highest percentage of comments about him that were negative."

Klipfolio sells cloud-based customized dashboards to companies that want to track various metrics, such as sales numbers, social media shares and website page views. In February, the company received a $6.2-million round of funding led by OMERS Ventures.

The public sentiment data used in the election dashboard comes from an integration with Talkwalker, a Luxembourg-based social media monitoring company. Ms. Mollot says the data is considered accurate 75 per cent of the time, due to difficulties in determining if some statements, for example ironic comments, are positive or negative.
